Today's Tip

Check Chain Wear - If you ride a lot, you should inspect your chain every six months or so to see if it should be replaced. Check chain wear by leaning your bike against a wall and pushing on a pedal to load the chain. Then, pick any chain pin on the top of the chain and measure to any pin 12 inches away. Because the links are exactly an inch long when new, you should be able to measure exactly 12 inches between two pins. If the measurement is 12 1/8 inches, or longer, it's time to replace the chain. Keep in mind, that when you replace the chain, you may also need to replace the cassette because they wear at approximately the same rate.

Cycling Glossary - Word of the Day

detangler

Also called a "rotor," this is a component found on the front end of many BMX bikes and some freestyle mountain bikes that prevents the rear brake cable from tangling so that you can do easy bar spins and tailwhips (spinning the bars or bike 360 degrees). It splits the brake cable into two segments, which are joined at a rotor installed above, or attached to, the bike’s head tube. As the bars rotate, the top segment spins while the bottom stays stationary and full braking power is available at every point of the rotation.
